Katana length in inches1/16/2024 ![]() Upon impact the bundled slats dissipate the force of the strike by flexing/bending along the length of the blade, and expanding slightly, along its cross-sectional area (stress = force/unit area). The shinai is useful as a practice sword to simulate the weight and feel of a katana or bokken without injuring the user or the target. This is held in place by a rubber ring tsuba-dome ( 鍔止め). Inserted between the ends of the slats, under the saki-gawa, is a plastic plug saki-gomu ( 先ゴム), and under the tsuka-gawa there is a small square of metal chigiri ( ちぎり), that holds the slats in place.Ī hand-guard tsuba ( 鍔) is then fitted on the tsuka-gawa before it ends and the bamboo slats show. This holds the slats together and also marks the proper kendo striking portion of the shinai, or datotsu-bu ( 打突部). The nakayui is tied about one-third of the length of the exposed bamboo from the tip. The parts are all secured with a string ( tsuru ( 弦)). The shinai comprises four slats known as take ( 竹), which are held together by three leather fittings: a hilt (tsuka), or handle wrapping ( tsuka-gawa ( 柄皮)) a fitting at the tip ( saki-gawa ( 先皮)) and a leather strip ( naka-yui ( 中結)) that binds the four slats. Shinai slats are also made of carbon fibre, reinforced resin, or other approved alternative materials. Some may also be treated by smoking them, or soaking them in resin. The slats of a shinai are usually made from dried bamboo. However, both shinai and bokken are used in kendo. A shinai should not be confused with a bokutō, which has a much more similar shape and length to a Japanese sword and is made from a single piece of wood. Shinai are available in many styles and balances. For example, an adult may be able to use a shinai that is too heavy for a younger person, so shinai with different sizes and characteristics are made. Specifications for shinai used in kendo competitions that follow the International Kendo Federation (FIK) rules are below.Ĭonstruction The shinai components The daitō is shorter and lighter than a shinai used in the itto style of kendo. The holding position can be switched, however, with the daito in the left hand and the shoto in the right. A ni-to combatant uses a long shinai called the daitō ( 大刀), which is usually held in the right hand, and a shorter shinai, called the shōtō ( 小刀), which is usually held in the left hand. This kendo style is usually called ni-tō ( 二刀), a style that has its roots in the two-sword schools of swordsmanship such as Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū. In kendo, it is most common to use a single shinai, sometimes called itto style. Shinai is written with the kanji 竹刀, meaning "bamboo sword", and is an irregular kanji reading. The word " shinai" is derived from the verb shinau ( 撓う), meaning "to bend, to flex", and was originally short for shinai-take (flexible bamboo). This also makes shinai popular in producing movies and television shows a prop shinai with a thin metal covering can look similar to a metal sword, while allowing cinematic, showy strikes that are nevertheless fairly safe to perform. This is also the motivation behind the development of bōgu ( 防具), the armour that protects the kendoka.ĭue to its lighter weight compared to a bokken or a metal katana, a shinai can be wielded in a fashion that allows quicker strikes than would be practicable with a heavier sword. The shinai was developed in an effort to reduce the number of practitioners being seriously injured during practice, making a practice weapon that was less dangerous than bokutō ( 木刀), the hard wooden swords they were previously using. The modern shinai, with four slats of bamboo, is generally credited to Nakanishi Chuzo Tsugutate (died 1801) of Nakanishi-ha Ittō-ryū. The earliest use of a bamboo weapon to train with instead of a sword is credited to Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (1508-1572?) of the Shinkage-ryū. The light, soft wood used in a shinai distinguishes it from other wooden swords such as a bokken, which is generally made of heavier, sturdier wood. Shinai are also used in other martial arts, but may be styled differently from kendo shinai, and represented with different characters. That process, they found, led from the initial transport of urea from the blood into the gut, to the breakdown of urea into its component parts by gut microbes, to the flow of substances – called metabolites – containing urea nitrogen back into the animal, and finally to the eventual appearance of this urea nitrogen in tissue protein. These labels allowed them to track the urea-sourced carbon and nitrogen through the different steps of the urea nitrogen salvage process. To do that, in their lab they injected their test squirrels’ blood with “double-labeled” urea, meaning the urea’s carbon atom was 13C instead of the usual 12C, and its nitrogen atoms were 15N instead of the usual 14N. In his study, Regan designed a series of techniques and experiments to investigate the major steps in the urea salvage process and provide evidence for whether or not they occur in the 13-lined ground squirrel when it hibernates. “If,” Regan continued, “there is an overlap between the proteins in spaceflight and the ones from hibernation, then it suggests this process may have benefits to muscle health during spaceflight.” He is now continuing his work through a Canadian Space Agency research grant at UdeM, where he last year took up a position as assistant professor of animal physiology in the Department of Biological Sciences. “Because we know which muscle proteins are suppressed during spaceflight, we can compare these proteins with those that are enhanced by urea nitrogen salvage during hibernation,” said Regan, who carried out this research while a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. ![]() If a way could be found to augment the astronauts’ muscle protein synthesis processes using urea nitrogen salvage, they could be able to achieve better muscle health during long voyages into deep space in spacecraft too small for the usual exercise equipment, the argument goes. How could this discovery be of use in space? Theoretically, Regan posits, by helping astronauts minimize their own muscle-loss problems caused by microgravity-induced suppression of protein synthesis and which they now try to reduce by intensively exercising. The theory posits that hibernators harness a metabolic trick of their gut microbes to recycle the nitrogen present in urea, a waste compound that is usually excreted as urine, and use it to build new tissue proteins. By studying a variety called the 13-lined ground squirrel that is common in North America, Matthew Regan has confirmed a theory known as “urea nitrogen salvage” dating back to the 1980s. Now, in research published in Science, an Université de Montréal biologist has figured out why, and his findings could have implications for, of all things, the future of space travel. How they avoid it, however, has been a mystery. ![]() ![]() Usually, this sort of prolonged fasting and inactivity would significantly reduce the mass and function of muscle, but hibernators don’t suffer this fate. With two Vampire Diaries spinoff series, The Originals and Legacies, there's the remaining question of whether Dobrev's Elena will make a reappearance in the universe and what her character has been up to. Though their romance would endure several more bumps going forward, including Damon not becoming human until the final episode, the restoration of Elena's memories remained one of the many peak emotional moments in The Vampire Diaries' central romance. It also served as a fitting parallel to the moment Elena became a vampire - when she learned of poignant moments with Damon that he'd previously compelled her to forget and which fueled her falling in love with him the first time. Still, the return of Elena's memories (and the true depth of the love they shared) served as the icing on the cake of their relationship. She stated such right before taking the cure, with Damon vowing to take it with her. Over the course of The Vampire Diaries season 6, even without her memories, Elena had fallen in love with Damon all over again. As such, Alaric's previous efforts were undone and Elena's memories of Damon were restored - starting with the charmingly awkward official first date the two shared. Similar to when a human becomes a vampire, the transition serves to break any and all past compulsions. As well as rendering her human, the cure also had a bonus side effect. After some setbacks, in The Vampire Diaries season 6, episode 20, "I'd Leave My Happy Home For You", Elena was finally able to consume it. Alongside Damon, Elena got everything she had wished for since becoming a vampire. With Bonnie Bennett's own, separate escape from the prison world, however, came the reemergence of the cure for vampirism. ![]() Though this returned bits and pieces of her memories, it wasn't enough to restore her full, true feelings. In a last-ditch attempt, Elena crossed the barrier herself. After changing her mind, however, the option was taken out of her hands when Alaric was rendered human by the magical barrier surrounding Mystic Falls. Still disliking Damon, she was at first unwilling to return to her previous status quo. Escaping, he was reunited with a newly amnesiac Elena. Unfortunately, it soon emerged that Damon was actually alive and instead trapped in an empty prison world previously created for the villainous Kai Parker. As a result, Elena once again viewed him as little more than a monster. Erasing this moment of realization from Elena's memory had a domino effect of removing every good memory she had of Damon. ![]() After a number of failed attempts, Elena confessed the truth: that she had fallen in love with Damon while technically still with Stefan. In the research cited by Bose, most users using the CustomTune system ended up close to an accepted good hearing aid fitting.
Periodic table chemistry with names1/15/2024 ![]() So the search was on to find them and to identify them and to characterize them. When the elements were arranged in this chart in the periodic table, it was easy to see right away that there are missing elements that have not been discovered yet, that have not been identified. Quirmbach: What sort of applications took off? It was not to serve any other purpose, but curiosity leads to discovery and discovery leads to application. It's about examining behavior, natural behavior, and trying to describe in words and language and in symbols, what the behavior pattern might be. You know, why is the sky blue? We make observations and try to make sense out of these observations and that's what science is all about. We ask questions, all kinds of questions. Shakhashiri: Human beings all of us are naturally curious. So they range from one, which is element hydrogen, all the way to element 118 which is the total number of elements in the periodic table today,Ĭhuck Quirmbach: Was he creating this and and the others that can certainly contributed to it, were they trying to serve some industry like cannon makers? That's the number of protons in an atom of that element. We learn the periodic table as the elements arranged according to the atomic number, which is an integer, a whole number. Later on, this turned out to be not so correct, but that's how it is in science. He proposed, sometimes, you know, people say he discovered the pattern of similar behavior and arranged the elements, according to are their atomic weights. And it came to him that there possibly is a pattern of repeated resemblance of behavior of certain elements. And, indeed, the fantastical realm of Element City is gorgeously imagined, both futuristic and romantic. And then take away those points because Cars 2 proves that even the mighty Pixar can’t transcend the central problem with sequels: You can make everything bigger, but you can rarely replicate what was novel and charming about the original.Įlemental continues a trend of recent Pixar movies that leave you thinking, Well, at least it looked amazing. Give Cars 2 points for audacity: The follow-up shifts away from the original’s small-town, homespun charm to become a sleek, globetrotting action-thriller focusing on Lightning McQueen’s country-bumpkin sidekick. But that didn’t mean we wanted to see Tow Mater in a James Bond spoof. Larry the Cable Guy was Cars’ secret weapon, lending his blue-collar earthiness to a character whose regular-folks demeanor had real pathos and sweetness. We’re not mad at Lightyear, we’re just disappointed. After a few years of taking chances, Lightyear feels like the safe, obvious, slightly lazy play from a studio that used to pride itself on not thinking that way. (Sox is voiced by Peter Sohn, who has worked at Pixar since the early 2000s, starting out as a story artist and doing voices on several of its films, not to mention directing The Good Dinosaur.) But this may be the first time that Pixar hasn’t fully justified one of its projects, at least creatively. Not surprisingly, Lightyear looks terrific, and it’s got some really funny moments - most of them provided by Sox, Buzz’s faithful robot cat. This origin story follows the adventures of Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans) as he works with a ragtag bunch of recruits to defeat alien invaders on a distant planet. This is not, inherently, a terrible idea: What if Pixar actually made the movie that first got kids in the ’90s psyched about Buzz Lightyear toys? What would that movie look like? What kind of character would Buzz be? Unfortunately, Lightyear is a letdown, not only because it doesn’t satisfyingly answer those questions, but because it’s not an especially great ’90s action movie in its own right - or, conversely, a sharp parody of one. It’s not so much bad as it is deeply dispiriting. ![]() And from Randy Newman’s by-the-numbers score to every single one of Mater’s tired quips, Cars 3 plays out like a rival studio’s lukewarm attempt to mimic Pixar’s magic. There isn’t one interesting new character, despite the effort from Hammer, Kerry Washington, Nathan Fillion, and Chris Cooper as Lightning’s cranky new trainer. But where at least Cars 2 consciously tried to go in a radically different direction, Cars 3 feels like a tame holding pattern, providing the race sequences and heartwarming homilies that were rampant in the first film - except without the same level of inspiration. Yes, the dopey Tow Mater is, blessedly, back on the periphery where he belongs while Lightning (Owen Wilson) squares off with two new foes: a sleek race car named Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) and, more imposingly, the growing realization that he’s not the king of the track anymore. ![]() Not exactly a high bar … and we’re not even convinced this film gets over it. The worst you can say is that, at this point, Pixar is fighting a losing battle trying to live up to its own glorious past.Įarly reviews of Cars 3 praised the latest installment in the Lightning McQueen saga for, essentially, not being Cars 2, the only Pixar film to receive a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of these movies work better than others, but all of them are trying to do something special - even if, in recent years, it seems like the studio’s magic has started to wane. We tried to keep context in mind - Toy Story had an ability to blow your mind in 1995 the way nothing could today - and also ambition: In the world of children’s entertainment, nothing has set Pixar apart more than its burning desire not to coast or mail it in. None of these movies is bad, but when you’ve made 27 films, one of them has to be No. Trying to rank all 27 Pixar feature films in order of quality is like trying to rank your children by how much you love them.
